Mesothelioma Lawsuit

When asbestos is intact, it does not pose a health threat. However, when the material deteriorates, asbestos fibres can be released
into the air and inhaled. Exposure to asbestos fibres has been linked to cancer, asbestosis (scaring of the lungs that restricts breathing) and mesothelioma (cancer of the lining of the chest cavity). The chances of getting an asbestos-related illness increase as the level and duration of exposure increases.

Many former uses such as flooring felt, rollboard, and corrugated, commercial, and specialty paper, and all new uses of asbestos in
the U.S. have been banned.

More than 1.3 million employees in the construction industry face significant exposure to asbestos on the job. Construction workers face heavy exposure to asbestos especially during the removal of asbestos during renovations or demolitions. Employees working in areas of manufacturing of asbestos such as textiles, friction products, insulation, and other building materials, are also likely to be exposed, as are employees working on automotive brake and clutch repair work.

Silicosis is an incurable lung disease that used to be common among industrial workers such as stonecutter and miners. The incidence rate has fallen 93% in the United States since 1968 in part because of 1970 federal laws that imposed limits on workers' exposure to silica dust.

In 2002, 148 deaths were linked to Silicosis as compared to over 1,100 in 1968.

The Center for Disease Control notes that thousands of Americans continue to be over exposed to the mineral dust in the workplace and news cases are still occurring. Silica sand is used to make glass and is a common ingredient in many industrial products. Repeated inhalation of its dust can scar the lungs.

There is a current batten with Congress to create a $140 billion fund to compensate victims of asbestos exposure. Asbestosis is a respiratory illness sometimes grouped with silicosis. Exposure from decades ago is only now being seen as workers succumb to illnesses.
